Preface

If 2020 was the first year of the Decentralised Finance (DeFi) breakthrough, then 2021 is undoubtedly the beginning of the GameFi explosion — the new model of blockchain-based games.

Since 2021, with the continuous improving efficiency of high-performance competitive public chains, as well as the new breakthroughs in Layer 2 and cross-chain technologies, coupled with the continuous out-of-circle Non-Fungible Token (NFT) and the continuous enrichment of DeFi scenarios, 「Blockchain Games」 have gradually gained mainstream attention. While achieving exponential growth, blockchain games have accumulated rich experience for the development of the broad concept of 「Metaverse」 and have become an important driver for the blockchain industry.

Blockchain games, combining the concept of NFT and the 「Metaverse」, is the most innovative arena of the 「Blockchain+」. This is one of the few consensus between the blockchain industry and the gaming industry.

Newzoo, a game market research organization, has released a “Global Game Industry Market Research Report 2020”. This report points out that due to the impact of the Covid-19 and the strong promotion of next-generation consoles, the total global value of games in 2020 is expected to reach $159.3 billion, which is an increase of 9.3% year-on-year. Almost half of gaming revenue comes from China and the United States. In addition, it is predicted that the revenue will exceed $200 billion by the end of 2023.

The fledgling 「Blockchain + Game」 industry is still in the early stages of development from the perspective of the number of projects, the number of users, activity, total market value and market share. However, this situation is constantly changing. As of the third quarter of this year, the investment in the blockchain game market has exceeded $1 billion, a huge increase from $72 million in 2020.

In the past six months, Axie Infinity (a typical example of the new game economy model) not only made the Play-To-Earn (P2E) model an overnight success, but also allowed 「Blockchain Games」 to gain a foothold with the unique entry point of P2E, they haven’t been adopted by mainstream gamers as of yet.

On the basis of this P2E model, high-performance public chains represented by Solana and Fantom, and blockchain games represented by Immutable X have emerged one-by-one. It is acknowledged that the maturity of the Layer 2 solution is a further development of blockchain games. Development has removed many key obstacles for the further development of blockchain games.

Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the current blockchain game industry, such as the simplicity and teething problems of some game models, the imperfection of business models and the stagnant growth of users. In addition, the ups and downs of token prices have a significant impact on the value and development of the project. The most prominent challenges are as follows…

1. Opposite rights and obligations between game developers and players.

Supply chain in the traditional gaming industry includes developers, publishers, distributors, game players and so on. However, their interests are in conflict in most cases.

Among them, developers are responsible for the production of the game and bear all the development responsibilities. If the game’s performance is ultimately lower than expected, it will cause the loss of users. Publishers and distributors are responsible for putting games on the shelves and promoting them, normally accounting for too much resource allocation in the entire game production and sales ecosystem.

In contrast, game players are a typical disadvantaged group. The core mechanism of the game is completely controlled by the game development team. They have delineated a clear boundary from the players and have absolute control, which allows them to take away any assets purchased or obtained by players through the game as they wish.

2. Lack of commitment on the rights of game players.

Traditional centralised game service providers can hardly avoid harming the interests of general game players due to their own interests or vulnerabilities in centralised servers, such as data leakage, rule changes, account closures, freezing of props and equipment and so on.

When a catastrophic event like this occurs, there is the possibility of loss of in-game assets that players have spent time and, in some cases, money on. Failure to recover the gameplay in time leads to reputational damage to the game developer from the disgruntled users.

3. Poor architecture performance and low development flexibility.

At present, the mainstream blockchain game model is relatively simple. The reason is that a good user experience requires feedback in seconds or even milliseconds. The current blockchain technology, however, cannot support what it needs to handle tens of millions of daily activities and a large number of concurrent system processing. Besides that, the existing blockchain infrastructure lacks functions and services adapted to the game industry. Lack of interoperability is the main problem of current blockchain games. Whether it is the classic game CryptoKitties or the new generation Axie Infinity, it is a segmented self-generating system. This means that value cannot be exchanged smoothly, and the sunk costs for gamers are extremely high.

In the background of the natural integration of the concept of 「Metaverse」 and the blockchain, different blockchain games will combine with their own communities to form a unique 「Metaverse」. This raises the question of how to integrate resources under a unified infrastructure and standardised protocol, so that different assets can be traded with each other, and even games can be interconnected. Axie Infinity’s daily revenue has surpassed the Arena Of Valor to become the world’s most profitable game. According to the statistics of Sensor Tower, a mobile application data analysis company, the revenue of Arena Of Valor reached $1.5 billion in the first half of this year, with an average daily revenue of $840,000. However, the average daily revenue of Axie Infinity is more than twice that of Arena Of Valor in July.

We are not just getting a glimpse of how blockchain is changing the world. It is coming to us faster than ever. Looking forward to the development of blockchain in the future, the game public chain project is considered to be the core infrastructure for blockchain games to move towards scale.

Abstract

5. On-chain storage: the absolute safety of asset

The development of decentralised blockchain games has gone through three stages:

1) Game tokens are issued on the chain.

2) Assets such as game equipment and props are confirmed by issuing NFT tokens on the chain.

3) The internal logic and core mechanism of the game are released on the chain.

Miracle Universe realises the on-chain storage of all material game information (tokens, assets, core mechanisms) via the integration with decentralised storage networks such as InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). This will fundamentally enable game tokens, core data, and mechanisms to be stored on the blockchain, realising complete transparency and trustworthiness of the game, and reducing various contradictions and conflicts caused by the inequality of rights between operators and players.

In the Miracle Universe, once the game prop assets are released on the chain, the operations of transfer, splitting, and withdrawal are strictly controlled by the public and private keys of the account, ensuring the safety of the user’s game property to the greatest extent.

Unlike most blockchain games with partially on-chain game assets or information, Miracle Universe can store all game data completely on-chain through mainstream decentralised storage network interfaces such as built-in IPFS on the underlying architecture. This guarantees the complete safety, immutability and ownership of game equipment, props and other assets.

In order to protect the legitimate rights and interests of users in the game, each user’s game activities will be recorded in the distributed storage network provider. Users can check their own game activities and the history of each asset transaction on their personal homepage at any time. These data are completely confidential through the encryption system, only the players themselves can view it through the “private key — asymmetric encryption algorithm” to ensure that the player’s behaviour on the platform will have a complete, comprehensive and absolutely secure record.

3) “Pluggable” accessed modular development components.

2. Technology architecture

The entire Miracle Universe system is divided into two parts, the underlying infrastructure and the application layer.

The underlying infrastructure is the most basic technical architecture that allows Miracle Universe to provide blockchain services and trusted transaction protocols. It consists of a basic layer, a core layer, a management layer, and an interface layer. It not only has the characteristics of a general public chain, but also a unique economic model.

The application layer directly connects game players and game developers. It provides high-availability and high-performance response support for complex real-time games by accessing the underlying infrastructure, so as to meet the processing requirements of all types of games.

2.1 Basic layer

The basic layer of Miracle Universe is a decentralised platform composed of multiple high-performance nodes, integrating game, asset issuance and circulation channels. The source code of the system has been open-source on Gitlub to ensure the transparency, security and reliability of the underlying system. At the same time, it also implements a faster and smaller go-amino codec, a basic database LevelDB, a encryption and decryption algorithm library, and a robust AVL+ Tree storage.

1) Redundancy Distributed Storage Network (RDSN)

After removing the control of centralised game operators, Miracle Universe ensures that the value benefits of the game’s characters, props, equipment, and virtual assets are given to the players.

In order to guarantee the absolute safe storage and efficient use of data in the entire Miracle Universe network, Miracle Universe applies the KAD algorithm, P2P network, TCP protocol and other technologies to build an RDSN architecture. RDSN avoids the centralised data storage model of traditional game service operators. Therefore, even if developers run away, the value and assets held by players will not disappear, but can be permanently stored on the chain.

In the Miracle Universe network, large static data files such as game download packages and patches will be divided into fixed-size data blocks (each block is not larger than 4MB). After the data is divided into blocks, they will be distributed and stored in each resource node in an encrypted form through the Data Encryption protocol. The P2P network can help fast resource synchronization.

2.2 Core layer

The core layer of Miracle Universe consists of three parts; distributed ledger (Native Sharding), consensus engine (SH-DPoS Consensus Algorithm) and Cross-chain IBC protocol (fully decentralised cross-chain system based on DCRM).

1) Native Sharding

Miracle Universe was originally designed as a sharding network, that is, a global system where users, enterprises, and infrastructure providers are interconnected. Sharding splits the entire Miracle Universe network into small partitions, which enables the system to be applied to different application scenarios.

Miracle Universe blockchain also allows every game project party to build private shards. This kind of private shards can be easily connected to the public chain, which means that each game project party can independently form a sharding Metaverse. In this way, resources can be called independently and high TPS can be achieved to meet the needs of different game scenes.

These private sharding Metaverse can be seamlessly set to be public or private, and the security is guaranteed by the Miracle Universe mainnet.

2) SH-DPoS Consensus Algorithm

The core layer is the core business of the underlying infrastructure of Miracle Universe, while the consensus advantage of SH-DPoS is the key and foundation for its differentiated competition.

The optimised and enhanced SH-DPoS (Self-Healing DPoS) consensus algorithm inherits the power of the traditional DPoS algorithm, but it also inherits its inefficiency (million-level TPS game public chain service). However, it has increased self-healing properties compared to traditional algorithms, assuring efficient error correction, fast delivery and strict protection.

Therefore, SH-DPoS not only provides guarantee for the architecture of the Miracle Universe game public chain, but also lays the foundation of the underlying code for the infinite possibilities of continuous upgrade and evolution.

3) DCRM-based decentralised cross-chain IBC design

IBC is the abbreviation of Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol. Using IBC protocol to exchange data packets, data and status information can be transferred between multiple blockchain networks. Assets traded in Miracle Universe can be replaced with other tokens via IBC.

DCRM is a distributed cross-chain and cross-layer communication technology that has stood the test of time and market. It is widely adopted by mainstream cross-chain applications such as Binance Bridge and Anyswap. The built-in integration of the Miracle Universe underlying infrastructure can ensure that blockchain games can seamlessly and safely realise the transaction and transfer of various encrypted assets (props, characters, equipment, etc.) on the Miracle Universe blockchain.

DCRM builds a bridge between blockchains to realise distributed, efficient, and secure interoperable solutions. It uses the decentralised encryption form of the Threshold Signature Scheme (TSS) to perform the underlying Multi-Party Computation (MPC). TSS allows multiple parties to jointly generate keys and signatures. So, no single party can obtain the complete key. The signature can only be passed with the approval of the other parties. This can guarantee the complete security of the core layer of Miracle Universe from a technical perspective.

2.3 Management layer

The entire management layer of Miracle Universe is designed with a plug-in model, which can be plugged and unplugged during the implementation. The verification module is the basic module, which provides verification functions for other modules.

The staking module and the consensus module work together to realise the SH-DPoS consensus. The incentive module uses reward and punishment mechanisms to promote node verification. The on-chain governance module and parameter management module together realise the continuous iteration of the entire ecosystem.

2.4 Interface layer

1) “JAVA and GO” dual language SDK

The Miracle Universe interface layer helps the blockchain to communicate with the outside world. The system provides two interfaces of WebSocket protocol and RPC protocol for external calls. It also provides SDKs in two languages (JAVA, GO) to help game developers interact with the underlying chain more easily.

2) FPGA hardware acceleration + Layer 2

The Miracle Universe platform combines FPGA hardware acceleration with Layer 2 expansion, to realise the peak of transaction matching rate at millions of transactions per second and the peak of transaction order processing rate at 500,000+ transactions per second.

Based on the Event callback mechanism in Python, the same order information as on the chain is stored on the network server. Users of the Miracle Game platform can directly receive push from the network server. It is able to accommodate data queries of 10,000 transactions per second.

2.5 Application layer

The application layer serves as the Miracle Universe ecological entrance, providing off-chain services and applications such as wallet (Miracle Wallet), development platform (Miracle Open), product engine (Miracle Game), and matching engine (Miracle Push). It aims to connect Miracle Universe, games Developers and game project parties and introduce more third-party values into the ecosystem, so that the Miracle Universe ecological cycle system can finally form a constant and stable expansion internally and externally.

Specifically, the underlying infrastructure (base layer, core layer, management layer, interface layer) of Miracle Universe blockchain has the advantages of collaborative technology such as tree structure storage algorithm, native sharding, DCRM cross-chain IBC design, etc., which attracts more and more game developers and gamers who have migrated to the Miracle Universe world to settle down.

Game developers can use MU as one of the product marketing strategies to obtain massive player traffic on the chain. In order to ensure the security of user accounts, the encrypted private key and verification will be used to ensure the security of the account in different usage environments. Miracle DEX is a completely decentralised trading platform through Automated Market Maker (AMM). Miracle DEX puts orders on the chain, and users can create and cancel orders by themselves. Legal, Policy and Regulatory Risk
